@Stephen's Rocket
Main campaign - Medium difficulty Can play as any of the 4 characters - Knight Marshal Calis, Lord Marcas, Archmage Krell, Sorceress Mordra
Progress is number of continents completed, then number of completed battles on current continent, then number of failed attempts, then time at completion of last battle - the campaign is semi-linear, some alternative battles will be cleared for you as you progress (but there are some unlockable abilities and heroes by choosing certain paths)
Completion of a battle is when you see a screen saying "'x' is the victor!"
There is a skippable lore blurb at the start of each continent that you can pause the time for (I want you to be able to enjoy the game!)
The first battle will be allowed as a tutorial for you to familiarise yourself - there is a walkthrough in the manual - so the timed run will begin when you start the second battle, Hoaroot Forest
"Show hidden units" must be kept off
Although you can save at any time, saving should be done between battles or for breaks - I would encourage this so that you have a restore point to go back to as one defeat is a game over
Notes
Resting a unit heals all wounds if not adjacent to an enemy unit (both land and air), 1 wound if adjacent to an enemy
Most battles are scripted scenarios with named sites but certain levels are procedurally generated for a particular terrain type, so don't worry if some places are just called 'Town' or 'Shrine' and the level doesn't quite look the same as in another playthrough
Many levels have flashing objective flags to capture in order to trigger the surrender condition, otherwise the enemy offers to surrender a battle once enough units are eliminated - you can play on to gain more unit XP and explore sites but you must then defeat every remaining unit within the turn limit to win the battle
If you lose control of all the objectives or run out of time or units you lose (even if you declined surrender)
I think I should clarify that the final failure counter will be for up to the last completed level, that is if you kept getting stuck on a level you don't finish in the time then you shouldn't be penalised for keeping on trying.
