About

Rayman is a classic platforming game that was released for the Sony PlayStation in 1995. It is known for its colorful and imaginative graphics, as well as its challenging gameplay and unique control scheme, which allows players to control the titular character's limbs independently. The game has spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, and is considered a classic in the platforming genre.

Here's the catch. Progress must be locked in with a save. This is necessary because if you don't save you lose your progress. And with branching paths, it's easier to track where everyone is. The exception to this is you don't need to save after beating Mr. Dark.

Even though PAL is slower than NTSC I've been told "they are both just as hard" so I don't think it will make a difference. PC and Jaguar versions are not eligible because of different levels.

There are 18 levels and 102 cages. That's 6 cages on each level except the last one. All cages must be found before you can attempt the final level. Some cages are unreachable the first time through a level, so you will need to backtrack after obtaining the necessary powerup. Hint for new players: cages will count if you exit through the front signpost, so you don't have to finish a level again when backtracking.

Stages where you meet Betilla the Fairy are cutscenes so you may pause the timer. This also allows you to practice using whatever new mechanic she gives you. The timer may also be paused on the world map to count levels and cages, but should be left running when otherwise moving between levels.

Saving is done on the world map at the points marked with a top hat. When you die you can continue on the same level or restart from your save point. We only track the number of times you use a continue. Deaths don't matter. Be sure to use a memory card as the password doesn't save the number of cages. We don't want a repeat of Crash Bandicoot. (PAL uses 3 blocks but NTSC only 2. I wonder why.)

@Fusha

Round 4 comes to a close. Despite being a pretty, colourful game for little children to enjoy, Rayman proved to be very rage-inducing for some of us grown-ups, even making the usually calm and level-headed Kythias lose his cool. Fueled by this rage, Lovenfloofen used amusing and colourful language like «cunt flaps!» while playing; carlconiglius was listening in on his stream at work, and a woman with a kid came into the shop, overhearing Floof's profanities. carl looked at her and simply said «Scottish», and, apparently, the woman understood.

Personally, I don't think it was that bad. Considering that most of us got anywhere from a fifth to half the game's cages in only 5 hours, we have made some excellent progress, and even made a friend along the way (the mosquito)! Kids playing in front of their consoles would have had much more time than us, free to bash their heads against slippery musical notation lines and replay levels to hunt for cages as many times as they wanted. In our case, Marcman proved to be the apex cage hunter, even while playing the game blind! This is his first 1st placement of the season, and he picked an excellent time to get it, but more on that later. Competition was very tight for the upper placements, with only 6 cages separating 2nd from 5th. Quantum moaned and groaned his way into second; being the only person in history to have completed this game as an adult definitely helped. Octobot just barely beat me to claim 3rd, and carlconiglius finished 5th with an excellent run, despite being sick with all of the world's flus at the same time.

That's the top 5 placements. However, the top 5 are no longer the only placements that matter! An important decision has been made by the Council, and from now on, placements all the way down to 10th will give you extra points! This applies retroactively to previous rounds as well, and shakes things up significally. Here's how the extra point distribution works now: 1st - 12 / 2nd - 10 / 3rd - 8 / 4th - 7 / 5th - 6 / 6th - 5 / 7th - 4 / 8th - 3 / 9th - 2 / 10th - 1 / Participation points remain unchanged. Notice that 1st and 2nd now gives you even more extra points that before. This makes finishing top 2 that much more lucrative, but also makes the middle of the table much more important too. Taking immediate advantage of this change, the sly and clever Marcman used his 1st place Rayman finish to propel himself into the lead, now being 6 entire points ahead of his nearest competitior (me!) in the season table. Marcman's lead is not something we are unused to, as he spent most of his time in Season 3 way ahead of the rest of us, and he's looking to do the same now! We will have to try extra hard to stop him!! And just like last season, the competitors under Marc are very close together. From now on, every placement will matter, every level beaten will have significance, every time we forget to save our game will let our competitors overtake us! Exciting times ahead!!!
