About

Lemmings is a classic puzzle-platformer video game originally developed by DMA Design (now known as Rockstar North) and published by Psygnosis. The game was first released in 1991 for the Amiga computer and later made its way to various other platforms, becoming one of the most iconic and beloved games of its era.

In Lemmings, players are tasked with guiding a group of small, green-haired creatures called Lemmings through a series of hazardous levels, ensuring their safe passage to an exit point. Here are the key features and gameplay elements of Lemmings:

Gameplay Concept: The Lemmings are simple-minded creatures that march forward continuously. The player's goal is to assign specific skills to individual Lemmings to overcome obstacles and reach the exit.

Skills and Abilities: Lemmings possess a range of skills, such as digging, building bridges, blocking paths, climbing walls, and more. Players must strategically assign these skills to individual Lemmings to navigate various obstacles in each level.

Level Variety: Lemmings offers a wide variety of levels, each with its own unique challenges and puzzles. As players progress through the game, the levels become increasingly complex and require more careful planning.

Limited Resources: Players have a limited number of Lemmings in each level, and it's essential to conserve them while ensuring that at least a certain percentage reach the exit safely.

Time Pressure: Most levels have a time limit, adding an element of urgency to the gameplay. Players must make quick decisions while also planning for the long-term success of their Lemmings.

Charming Graphics and Music: Lemmings features colorful and whimsical graphics, and it is known for its catchy music and sound effects, which have become iconic.

Multiplayer: Some versions of Lemmings included a multiplayer mode where players could compete to complete levels with the highest success rate or in the shortest time.

Lemmings was a massive success upon its release and received critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay, challenging puzzles, and charming presentation. It spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs and remains a classic in the puzzle-platformer genre.

The term "lemmings" has also entered popular culture as a metaphor for people who blindly follow the crowd without thinking for themselves, thanks in part to the game's premise of Lemmings mindlessly marching forward until the player intervenes to save them from danger.

Outro

@Kythias

I think this was one of our highest number of submissions to date, with 19 people killing uncountable amounts of lemmings over the course of 5 hours each. And we've also seen a mix up of the season table as those who excelled at being emergency services also excelled at sending Lemmings to their doom, so it's quite a tight race at the top!

Our top three finishers for Lemmings, all with absolutely phenomenal scores:

1st - @Stephen's Rocket - 64 Levels Cleared
2nd - @BlinkHazard - 63 Levels Cleared
3rd - @HandsomeStrife - 59 Levels Cleared

Overall, I think everyone hated the idea of Lemmings but had an unexpectedly good time with it - there were a lot of uses of the max 5 hours including my own on stream last night when I absolutely didn't intend to use 5 hours, all to end up with just a single point anyway!
