About

"Pokémon Gold" is a timeless classic in the Pokémon series, originally released for the Game Boy Color in the year 2000. Set in the enchanting Johto region, this second-generation Pokémon game introduced a world teeming with adventure, new Pokémon species, and innovative gameplay features. Players assume the role of a budding Pokémon Trainer on a quest to become the Johto League Champion, encountering exciting challenges, formidable Gym Leaders, and the enigmatic Team Rocket along the way.

One of the standout features of "Pokémon Gold" is the introduction of a real-time clock, which brought day and night cycles to the Pokemon world. This added depth and realism to the gameplay, influencing not only the availability of certain Pokémon but also affecting in-game events and encounters.

With its dual-region exploration, the ability to revisit the Kanto region from the previous game, "Pokémon Gold" expanded upon the already captivating Pokémon universe. It remains a beloved favourite among fans for its rich storytelling, strategic battles, and the enduring joy of capturing, training, and battling Pokémon creatures. "Pokémon Gold" is a cherished journey that has stood the test of time, continuing to captivate new generations of trainers as they embark on their epic adventures in the world of Pokémon.

Rules

Genre: Roleplaying Game (RPG)
Platform: Game Boy Colour (GBC)

Progress: Gym Leaders / Elite Four Beaten > Time

The rules: Hit the throttle, no ‘roiding. 5 hours, standard speed.
Standard Pokémon Nuzlocke rules are:
• Name your Pokémon
• Catch only the first Pokémon you see in each area (except duplicates)
• If it faints, it’s dead. You must release the Pokemon
• Battle Style in the options must be "Set"
• No items in combat

Save reloading is not permitted.

With a hardcore ruleset, this puts a level cap on your monsters: they cannot be stronger than the next gym leader or Elite IV member's strongest Pokémon. If you exceed the cap, that Pokémon is ineligible for that leader.
Here’s the level cap breakdown:

Johto:
Gyms 5-7 can be down in any order
Gym 1 - Violet City: Level 9
Gym 2 - Azalea Town: Level 16
Gym 3 - Goldenrod City: Level 20
Gym 4 - Ecruteak City: Level 25
Gym 5 - Cianwood City: Level 30
Gym 6 - Olivine City: Level 35
Gym 7 - Mahogany Town: Level 31!
Gym 8 - Blackthorn City: Level 40
Elite IV 1 - Will: Level 42
Elite IV 2 - Koga: Level 44
Elite IV 3 - Bruno: Level 46
Elite IV 4 - Karen: 47
Elite IV Champion: Level 50

Kanto (unlikely to hit, start in Vermilion):
Pewter City: Level 44
Cerulean City: Level 47
Vermilion City: Level 46
Celadon City: Level 46
Fuchsia City: Level 39
Saffron City: Level 48
Cinnabar Island: Level 50
Viridian City: Level 58
Red: Level 81

TL;DR: Do read fully, cannot fuck about.

Welcome back to the Struggle, everyone! For some, the start of the year is a chance to make positive changes. New year, new me and all that shite. But that's not what we're all about, is it ladies and gents? Nay! We're here to run out of PP and struggle our way to victory! So how delightfully appropriate that we would play out our first Pokémon nuzlocke since Season 1?

Now granted, this was a Nuzlocke with some chest hair on it. A level cap was SET alongside the standard rules to ensure the normally gentle second Gen would bare some gnashers. And how! Of our 13 strugglebugs, only three champs in the making rolled out of the shadow of Whitney's cheeky cow.

Taking bronze is Stephen's Rocket, with an exceptional grab for the third gym badge with just 11 minutes to spare. He's bettered first by...me! I'll admit my own disappointment that I succumbed to (burp) Morty's Gengar, having levelled too much into a zubat and not focusing on my unit of a Geodude. But for one favourable magnitude roll, I'd have given Alondite a bit of a scare. But there was no catching the Sniper of the Struggle, who accumulated an incredible FIVE badges en route to glorious victory.
