About

Kula World, known as Roll Away in the United States, is a 3D platform puzzle game focussed on controlling a Kula beach ball. In each level the player navigates a floating 3D construction, looking for a key that unlocks the level's exit. Scoring points and collecting all of the fruit can give the player access to bonus levels, and saving is permitted every 5 levels of progress. The game was very well known due to its inclusion on several demo discs, including Demo One, that came as a pack-in with a Playstation console during 1998. The game was nominated for the "Best Puzzle Game" award at the 1998 OPM Editors' Awards, but lost out to Devil Dice.

Intro

One day in our very storied and traumatic past - we had a beach ball that floated away at the seaside on a coastal breeze. Now, Dad said that ball was destined to suffer a slow puncture and languish in a downwind rock-pool for all eternity, but imagine… What if? What if instead, that ball went on to have an adventure on some weird geometry floating in the sky and BOOM! You’ve just pictured Kula World. Mostly. Imagine some spikes and keys as well. Okay NOW you’ve got it. Kula World.

You play as a sentient beach ball, rolling your way around the aforementioned sky-mazes in search of points, which you can find in the form of delightfully jovial fruit, crown coins and keys. In fact those keys are mandatory as they unlock the exit zone, helpfully signposted with a giant X. You can also jump, which can be quite dangerous for beach balls, as are the spikes. Navigate your way through as many levels as you can - there are 150, not counting bonus levels (activated upon collecting all of the fruit at the bottom of the screen) or hidden levels (opened by doing certain actions). It’s kind of hard to tell when you’re in one of these additional levels, so we’re going to count those too - making a maximum of 190 possible levels to complete.

In the game you have a chance to save every 5 levels, which is strongly encouraged. There are no lives, rather, if you fail a level, points will be deducted from your score. If your score hits zero, then it’s Game Over, and you are going back to your last save point. Bonus Levels give out the most score so hunting for fruit is highly beneficial and good for you!

Rules

Scoring:

Levels Complete > Time.

Play Arcade mode, you are allowed to save your game. Count every completed level you play, including any that may be Bonus or Hidden; that is your score. Remember or write down what your score is at each save you make - so that if you are forced back to that save by a Game Over, you can resume your scoring accurately an don't count levels twice by accident. We do this because the levels aren't numbered and it isn't easy to tell exactly how many levels you have beaten.

For example - you save at 15 levels complete (writing down 15), then get to 18 levels complete and game over. On loading, you reset your counter to 15 as that's what you wrote down on your last save. Your progress or scoring is still 18, that doesn't change, but you have returned to the state of having 15 levels complete. Playing on you beat four levels, you then KNOW that you have beaten 19 levels. This would then mark new progress for you. The reason we don't just say "furthest level beaten" is that, if you then found a special extra level in the 16th level, you could beat what everyone might call "Level 19" but with 20 levels completed - catch our drift? We couldn't look up a list of bonus levels and how to get there without ruining the struggle for ourselves so, they're fair game. If you find and complete bonus levels, they count.

Put simply, after loading from a save, you must reachieve your levels complete total, before you can add to it again.

Also just to further clarify - if you beat a bonus level and then game over before saving - in this example between level 16 and 17, but then go back to 15 - if you do not access the bonus level the next time, then your next progress would be after beating level 20 and not 19 - you only count the amount of levels you complete, TOTAL. To make progress you need to beat more levels, simple as.

If you beat 19 levels total and then decide to bounce, your score is 19 at the time you first achieved it!

NTSC-U Version Only! We will play Roll Away, not Kula World!
