About

Mega Man Soccer is the unfathomable 1994 centre of the Venn diagram containing blue robot children and football. Yes football, pipe down Yanks. The game itself is a traditional soccer game with exhibition matches, tournaments, and leagues that can be played both single-player and multiplayer depending on the mode. It also features previous Robot Masters from the main series, each with their own unique special shots. Just why this exists is anyone's guess, but looks like it somehow slipped into the back of the net and now we all have to make the best of it. Unfortunately overall reception on Mega Man Soccer has been average, particularly due to its perceived poor play control.

Intro

We know what you’ve been thinking. You’ve been watching that little blue robot boy jump about the place, cheesing bosses with the weapons he’s won along the way - always on the side of good, the light. We know you’ve been wondering if he’s any good at footie - us too. It’s time to get to the bottom of that particular debate by playing Mega Man Soccer - just how bad can a sports game with a coat of robot paint be?

You will be playing League, 1P vs COM. As a result, timers off for this one - that’s right - no timer, all struggle. You are allowed to play three League seasons, and your submission will be the best one that you play, giving you three chances. One season is 7 matches, each match is 10 minutes. One season takes approximately 1½ hours - so expect your total play time this week to sit somewhere between 4-5 hours.

All options other than key-config to remain at default. Yes we see you clever clogs trying to move the goalposts - play fair!

Rules

Scoring:

GP > GD.

GP is earned by winning, and lost by losing. GD is the goal difference, so try to score a lot.

There is no tutorial in this game, so you can play up to three exhibition matches to get a feel for the controls and see what stats each robot master has. Furthermore, you're allowed to select teams in League mode and reset the game before the first match starts to see what robot masters are on each team. But once you commit to playing a league, that’s one of your three attempts.

Helpful Information:

  • Offense Controls: Y to pass, B to shoot, A to kick the ball downfield, R+B to use your special kick (2 per match allowed).
  • Defence Controls: Y to slide, A to shoulder tackle.
  • Ball in Air Controls: Y to hit ball with head, B to bicycle kick.
  • Start: Pause.

Mega Man Soccer, the hit game of Summer 2024, has now officially closed! Let's see who dropped their shoulder to deliver devastating goals like Steven Gerrard, and who slipped on the field like Steven Gerrard. (These are my two known facts about Steven Gerrard.)

🥇 @enbyzee
🥈 @NerdyFiona
🥉 @DMAC
@Stephen's Rocket
@shmumbler
@Fusha
@Tater84
@RaefGall
@geckish
@16bit_hyper_turbo

Fun fact: In testing this game prior to nominating it, I only achieved a +28 GD which paled in comparison to the top 11 finishers who absolutely destroyed this game. Bravo!
Zee and Fi had a grueling back-and-forth contending for the top spot, with Zee barely clutching it with seconds to spare in their final match of the third season. Both had managed to break the 200 GD threshold, rolling the scoreboard over twice!
DMAC and Stephen continue to impress, bringing home 3rd and 4th and keeping close to Zee's expanding 1st place lead.
Newcomer to the wheel and friend to all, Shmumbler joined the Discord and immediately dropped a 5th place submission on the same day, not a bad way to start off!
Fusha brought home 6th place, having tasted 1st place ever so briefly...until all those other pesky strugglers decided to submit!
Tater scored his first Season 6 win over Deccy, only needing to complete a single season, and brought 7th home to boot. Tater now trails Deccy 1-3.
Raef showed serious promise in his first two seasons, threatening the top echelons with his rate-of-scoring. However, the Mega Man Soccer withdrawals hit hard when he attempted his final season days later, landing him 8th place.
Geckish quietly moseyed through his first two seasons, then crushed his third, going from +18 to +71 GD and snagging 9th.
16bit cursed his way to 10th place. Perhaps if he had his Pitties on earlier in his stream, he'd have done better?
Deccy didn't finish a game, while Kylo and Garlips skipped this week. fart sounds

Great effort, everyone! I know that game is contender for game of the season, and everyone is already going through Mega Man Soccer withdrawals, but the Wheel must move on! I'm joking, of course. That game was terrible and that's the entire reason I nominated it. I did not anticipate the game being so thoroughly deconstructed, though, which was definitely enjoyable to see.

Looking at the leaderboard, Zee is still holding onto 1st place, but with a couple of missteps on Tony Hawk and Mario 3, will she hold onto it through Weeks 5 and 6? Stephen and DMAC are right on their heels. Meanwhile, Tater now leads Deccy in points, but is still behind in the head-to-head. Poor Fiona, still fairly new to the wheel, is currently stuck between two bars.

Keep struggling!
